eaglebluff

Took this the other day on the bluff overlooking the mouth of the Kenai River. I had been sitting and reading – just vegging away from the office – when motion caught my eye. Grabbed the camera and tried to get some closeups of two golden eagles. They weren’t too cooperative and this is the best I could do – knew they wouldn’t stick around if I walked up to them and besides . . . that is the edge of the bluff right there and it is unstable. I don’t intend to fall. 😉

eagletree

In this shot, one of the eagles is sitting in the tree – that is the blob you see on the right side, down about half way. What was so funny to me is all of the ravens which decided to sit in the tree with the eagle. Also note the red sign to the side of the tree telling us to stay back away from the edge of the bluff.

Not sure how goldens react to other birds – this is actually the first time I’ve gotten to watch any at all.

Bald eagles, on the other hand, are funny creatures – they will allow (smaller) sea gulls/terns to steal their food – dive bomb them and stress them out. Pretty interesting to watch.

Another first for me last week . . . hubby and I were driving home from the Ladybug’s house when I saw two bald eagles in a “death spiral”. It’s part of their mating ritual – these were locked together high in the air and fell straight downward in a spiral until just above a friend’s house. They unlocked talons and flew off in separate directions.

I was in awe. I’ve lived here for 28 years and this is the first time I have seen this ritual. I’m honored to have witnessed it.
