Sleep Study

Johnni laughed. She was supposed to keep a diary of her sleep patterns for a week before they would do the sleep study.

She had been faithfully writing; the small journal the lab had given her was becoming dog eared and smudged. Sighing, she took up her pen:

DAY 3: Today is the third day since I started this journal. But it’s my 6th day without sleep. I can’t make the thoughts stop. What is wrong with me? I lie here night after night thinking TONIGHT is the night I will be able to sleep.

Question: is exhaustion my new normal?

Let normal return to her life. 6 days without sleep. Must be terrifying.

Oh, that would be miserable. Makes me want to go catch sleep before I miss it :)

This sounds horrible! But who am I to talk? I’m writing this at 4:40 AM! Very nicely done.

I have never experienced insomnia – I have, however, as a result of my chosen career in computers, been up and awake for as much as two days at a time. By the end of two days awake, things start getting a little freaky, for me. Hallucinations and all that.

I try not to do that any more.

I like your piece – I need to suggest a couple of edits: “would the sleep study” needs to be “would do the sleep study” – and then to keep your word count correct, you could change “faithful in writing” to “faithfully writing”. Yes?

Wow..a powerful piece! I had insomnia and it ruled my life, I realized that when I am having a piece of mind like now , after my divorce and now that I am remarried to the most wonderful man, I sleep so much better.

Great job!

Thanks, Lou. Your edits are “spot on.” Can you tell I’ve been watching the Olympics in between bouts of writing?

This is a tense piece. I can feel her anxiety coming through the page. Thanks for linking up with us again. Don’t forget to come on back for the new challenge tomorrow.

I feel that way sometimes. I do keep a notebook next to my bed so I can write down the random thoughts that wake me up in the middle of the night.
