Monthly Archives:August 2006

So the story all these years is that I am Irish – “me da was Irish” – you know, the whole Irish Catholic background thingy. But I’ve never been able to go very far back into “me da’s” family ethnicity and lineage – mostly due to an unfortunate need for a name change upon arrival in America – or so the story goes. “We were running from the . . . .” you fill in the blanks.

And, now most of the family is gone. Only one aunt lives on Dad’s side. And, worse yet – NONE of the family kept good records as far as I know. That’s the way of life for laborers and their families growing up in the lower west side (aka the Bottoms) of Columbus, Ohio.

So, it was kind of fun to find a link to a reliable census information page while I was looking through our local library’s website. I’ve found links to so called census links before and they were all “you pay us and then maybe we’ll share information” type places.

This one, however, had census pages photographed and names linked to the proper pages! Woot! Here was something I could play with.

And, sure enough, in the Fourteenth Census of the United States: 1920 Population, I found me da’s da. And, indeed discovered that my grandfather (who was gone before I was born) had been born in Ohio, but HIS father had been born in Ireland. My grandmother – known to all of us as Mom-Mom – was born in Ohio and her mother’s mother (my great great-grandmother)was born in Ireland as was her mother’s father (my great great grandfather).

School days, school days, dear old golden rule days,
Readin’ and ‘ritin’ and ‘rithmetic, Taught to the tune of a hick’ry stick,
You were my queen in calico, I was your bashful barefoot beau,
And you wrote on my slate, I love you Joe, When we were a couple of kids.

It won’t be long now . . . just a few more days . . . a collective sigh of relief will go up from every mom with school aged children . . . a collective cry will go up from said school aged children. One with glee – one not so gleeful.

Yes, indeedy. School is starting soon – next Tuesday, I do believe. The Boy has to go in on the 21st for his freshman (!!!) orientation – to which, btw, parents are not encouraged to attend. Poor Lessa- she’s the mama of a high schooler! lol

At the other end of the spectrum, little miss Ladybug will be attending kindergarten this year. That will be all but one of the grandbabies in school. Izzy has another year before he is old enough for Head Start.

All of the little ones being pushed out of the net . . . poor Nana Moosie. Poor Paw-Paw Moosie. These babies are just growing up way too quickly.

aka – On the Road Again . . .

I will be heading off to Homer next week to make a presentation on women with disabilities and domestic violence. This is the final presentation of the little grant we received – remember the training I attended in Anchorage? And then the presentation I did here in June? And the trip I took to Vegas? (no, not the wedding, sillies – the other one) All of those have to do with a larger grant funded by CALCASA called Project Access.?

I head down Wednesday afternoon to pick up the meeting room key and to get the room set up – refreshments into the fridge, etc. Then the other presenter and I will do two days on the subject. I will stay over one more night – because I don’t do well on the road when I am tired.

So, what to do on that last night? Hmmmm???

Well, theatre, of course! And, Arsenic and Old Lace to be exact. I can remember my first theatre experience – it was at a small community center and my mom took my sister and me to see this very play. I, of course, didn’t understand much of the adult humor, but I remember how mesmerized I was by the whole theatre thing.

So, I have made my reservations and just need to pick up my ticket the night of the performance. Memories.

Oh – this theatre? Not exactly like Gladden Community Center. This one has quite a history to it. The seats are all mismatched chairs – well, at least they are chairs now. The first time I went there we reclined on pillows on raised steps. Memories.

but I digress . . .

YAY!! Again –

While I was in Vegas at the conference, an upcoming conference was mentioned – assistive technologies – and I expressed an interest in attending. Unfortunately they only had so much money to go around and would not be able to take everyone who wanted to attend. But I was requested to apply as an alternate.

Today? Today I received word that I will be attending!

It is the week after my Homer trip.

I will be coming home on Saturday – washing and repacking – heading up to Anchorage on Sunday to fly out on the early, early (and probably way too full) flight on Monday.

Where?

Nashville, Tennessee!! Woot!

long long time ago we drove through Nashville on the way to somewhere else (Louisiana). I remember stopping in front of the Grand Ol Opry House – we used to love to watch that on tv – but we didn’t stay long.

Not sure how much playing I will get to do – but I am leaving myself open for the adventure.

Whew! Can we say traveling moosie? Hopefully the flights will not be as memorable as the last ones. :moose:

Skatemom is back! Thanks for visiting, so I would know where to find you.

Yay!

:moose:

Okay, folks – there are only 25 of these in existence – and five have been sold. This is your chance to own a print of a special mandala Ms. Lo made for someone special to her. I have mine on order . . . what about you?

Check it out here

in other news . . .

We had our monthly staff meeting today – one of our presenters was unable to make it, but the director had plenty of business for us to discuss – and many of us came out with assignments to complete (holiday party planning, etc.) :moose:

Prior to all of that, however, was the employee of the quarter (late by a month) announcement. Our bookkeeper was one of two named – the moosie was the other! My goodness – I have been there for 5 years now, and this is the first time I have been chosen. I feel quite – well – I’m not sure what. The things that were said about me were very sweet. I am appreciative.

Now, the bookkeeper and I get to share the coveted parking spot – heh – and we each receive 4 hours of leave time to be taken before the end of October. And, our name gets placed in a frame to be hung in the front office.

Did I mention the coveted parking spot? :moose:

Still feeling a bit under the weather – the head cold slipped into my chestal regions which is resulting in much coughing and gagging. Yuk! I came home midmorning Monday from work and didn’t even make it in Tuesday. Went in today because I needed to turn in my time sheet (hey, a gal knows what is important!!!) and I was overseeing the staff meeting in our education coordinator’s absence. Took it easy, however, and people pretty much left me alone – something about that barking cough that seemed to deter them. hah.

okay – enough fun for now. Paw-Paw Moosie is out shopping with the Boy and the Girl – they are going fishing tomorrow morning and needed (NEEDED!!!) snacks to eat in the boat. lol. Did I ever tell you about the last great halibut fishing trip I took? (speaking of snacks – ewwwww)

‘Night all.

:moose:

I don’t know about you all, but I just really dig these little :moose:es Lessa made for me. Thanks, gorlie!!
