“What was that? Who’s there?â€
The girls clutched at each other in fear. Being there was against the rules and every creak and whisper set their hearts a-flutter.
“You go first . . .â€
“No, you . . .â€

The weekend challenge from the eye-strained editors at Trifecta is to write the FIRST 33 words (aka incipit) to our books. I grew up reading Nancy Drew, Cherry Ames, and the Hardy Boys (why, yes, I AM old . . . but the books were older than I). My thoughts went immediately to a Young Adult mystery.
I could picture two teen girls clinging together. I imagine myself and my high school friend coming home to a dark house after seeing the movie Halloween.
Sends the imagination on a ride.
I’m guessing the girls don’t really want to know who’s there, but I want to read more so I can find out.
All too familiar to me…getting into trouble. I was always ade to go first when all I wanted was for someone else to.
Perfect – The girls doing something against the rules. Someone lurking nearby. A definite read. I also grew up reading Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys. WOuld love to read more.
I was lucky. My older sister always went first. Nice take!
Great! I can almost visualize the next sentence!! So..finish it!!!
Very vivid opening that leaves me wondering why they are there in the first place.
I read those books, too! It has nothing to do with age–it’s all about class, Barbara. 🙂 I liked this. I think you should continue it. I’d love to read more.
Cherry Ames! I loved those books (and Nancy Drew et al.). You really grab our attention with this opening. Nice job!
Suspense! LOVE it! Want more please!
I’m reading through all these links and am loving it, as I’m brand new to Trifecta. Just posted mine today.
I’ll be back for sure. New follower and fan.
