The deep loam of the fields smelt of horse manure, warm and earthy. Melissa inhaled deeply.
“This is what I’ve been missing, Papa,” she said softly. “The city just isn’t the same. I thought I could make it after Josh died.”
Papa gathered his weeping eldest child into his arms.
“There, there, girlie. Your Papa is here. Your home is here. For as long as you need us, we’re both here.”
Melissa nodded, took the oversized plaid hankie from her father and wiped her eyes. Together they walked across the pasture to Mama’s kitchen. Coffee and fresh cinnamon rolls awaited.

So sad but so well described. The scents you used were so telling.
I’ve been talking to Thomas Marlowe and we are both missing the Trifecta Challenge. One thing led to another and we have decided to set up Light and Shade Challenge where there are prompts twice every week and a chance to share what inspiration strikes.
We are not trying to be the same as Trifecta. They were awesome and I miss them. We do have some really exciting ideas of our own, though and can’t wait to see what happens. It would be great if you could come and join us and see where this journey takes us. Good writers are always welcome. If you have any questions then get in touch either on the Light and Shade Challenge Blog http://lightandshadechallenge.blogspot.co.uk/ or on the Facebook page. It would be wonderful to hear from you. Lovvve this so much Barbara!
I know the EXACT warm and earthy scent Melissa let comfort her! It’s what our place smells like, especially this time of the year. And she’s right, the city just isn’t the same.
This is beautiful <3
As they say, you can always come home.
