We were so young
Wet behind the ears
Out to change the world
Change the minds around us

Wild in our abandon,
We danced in the parks
Dishabille
Barefoot and fancy free

FREE

That was the word
We used to describe ourselves
Who we thought we were
Who we wanted to be

What we were
Was our parents
In junior form

Oh, we tried not
To let them rub
Off on us

They did

We got it all

We became them
As they had become
Theirs before

Wild and free
War torn and careworn
Not so wild after all

Human

ahhh those wild, wild editors at Trifecta challenged us this week to find out where the WILD ones are. 33-333 words using WILD in its third definition. Apparently I’m in a 100 word groove as that is the word count on this piece. How many wild words do you have?

Well said. It’s inevitable, isn’t it? I agree with it in the grand scheme of things, but the little things? I’d like to think I’m making some good changes. =)

  2. Swirls says:

So true. We think we have it all when we are young, only to become a variation of our parents, which we swore we would never do. Well put.

  3. Annabelle says:

I think we can all relate to this. I like the way you ended it — not a tragedy, just a part of being human.

  4. Tara R. says:

Were we really ever that young and idealistic?

  5. Paula J says:

Oh, my. This is really good.
I don’t know which I’ve spent more energy on. Trying to be like my mother or trying not to be like her.

  6. Mel says:

I like how you say “We became them As they had become
Theirs before.” It is so true. Growing up, becoming adults, becoming consumed with all the adult responsibilities can drive the wild right out of you.

Thanks for linking up this week, Barbara. Your piece is so timely for me. I’m preparing to go “home” to visit my parents after being away for quite awhile. And I’m finding it really interesting how much more I can relate to them now that my kids are starting to get older. Things aren’t so black and white anymore, and my passion for arguing the gray is kind of fading with time.

Anyway, great response! I always look forward to reading your posts. Thanks for sharing them with us.
