sigh! It’s snowing – yet again. All together now: hahahahahahaha

NOT!!! Good grief! I drove into the sister town to take a photo of the bridge reconstruction – Brookston Photo Challenge for the week is a bridge – and it was spitting rain – then it began to look white. It was chilly enough for SNAIN (SNAIN = SNOW and RAIN mixed – aka sleet, I guess) and sure enough, SNAIN we began to get.

It’s MAY, people!!!! Bring on the sun, wouldja?

ah well – tomorrow is another day.

When’s the last time you did something just for the sheer fun of it?

Tonight we had a small get together at the local (small town) airport’s cafe. There were a dozen or so of us there – and then other folks, too. But our group seemed to have the most fun. We laughed (a lot) and ate (too much) and shared silliness.

And then . . .

we decided to share the wealth. You see, hubby Moose had bought a large box of 100 Grand candy bars and was passing out a hundred grand to the group. We had watched a (very) small (teeny-tiny) plane come in and then one of the regular commuters (not that much bigger, but it holds more people) came in.

Lessaย and I looked at each other and grabbed one of the other women and then grabbed most of the left over candy bars and we ran to the gate. Whereupon we greeted each person who got off the plane with

Hi – welcome to Kenai!

We were, in turn, met by a lot of confused stares, but only a couple turned down the candy bars. Did I forget to say – CHOCOLATE?! ๐Ÿ˜‰

You know, we live in a small town. My motto is “I live in Alaska, I make my own fun.” And tonight we just shared the love.

Until the candy ran out – and then we ran out before the last few people came through the gate. Didn’t want any hurt feelings.

Guess someone on the other side of the gate (probably waiting to board for Anchorage) was giving us (okay, Lessa said she was giving ME) weird looks. I think she just wanted a candy bar.

What do you think?

eaglebluffย

Took this the other day on the bluff overlooking the mouth of the Kenai River. I had been sitting and reading – just vegging away from the office – when motion caught my eye. Grabbed the camera and tried to get some closeups of two golden eagles. They weren’t too cooperative and this is the best I could do – knew they wouldn’t stick around if I walked up to them and besides . . . that is the edge of the bluff right there and it is unstable. I don’t intend to fall. ๐Ÿ˜‰

eagletreeย

In this shot, one of the eagles is sitting in the tree – that is the blob you see on the right side, down about half way. What was so funny to me is all of the ravens which decided to sit in the tree with the eagle. Also note the red sign to the side of the tree telling us to stay back away from the edge of the bluff.

Not sure how goldens react to other birds – this is actually the first time I’ve gotten to watch any at all.

Bald eagles, on the other hand,ย are funny creatures – they will allow (smaller) sea gulls/terns to steal their food – dive bomb them and stress them out. Pretty interesting to watch.

Another first for me last week . . . hubby and I were driving home from the Ladybug’s house when I saw two bald eagles in a “death spiral”. It’s part of their mating ritual – these were locked together high in the air and fell straight downward in a spiral until just above a friend’s house. They unlocked talons and flew off in separate directions.

I was in awe. I’ve lived here for 28 years and this is the first time I have seen this ritual. I’m honored to have witnessed it.

sundog?

This sun dog shot was taken from the “bluff” in Old Towne Kenai in February. Sun dogs occur as light is reflected through ice crystals. That’s?it in?(very!) layman’s terms. To read more about the phenomenon,?go to?University of Illinois – Sun dogs?or Sun dogs from Wikipedia. The more scientific explanations are there.

One of our local (Anchorage) tv stations, KTUU?shows viewer’s photos during the weather portion of the news. This is one of three pics that I sent to morning weather man Scott Elnes on Saturday. This is the one that he showed that night – AND this morning. ๐Ÿ˜‰ That’s just pretty cool. He even spelled (and pronounced) my IRL name correctly! Those of you who know my IRL name know that it can be a bit problematic to some. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Thanks, btw, to Blyght at The Moodgarden for her Friday tag. It’s nice to meet you.

And, in the She is sooooooooooooo her Mama’s daughter department: (more…)

I had a tough time deciding which of my leaf pics to show for the Brookston challenge. (you can see the other pics there on the flickr sidebar) The extra point eludes me because at this time of the year ALL of the leaves are pretty much brown – no other colors. ๐Ÿ˜‰ That’s Alaska for you.

I did consider the shot with the icicle hanging down. But eventually I chose this photo of a leaf clinging to my lilac bush – not for the leaf itself, but for that promise it holds. Look at the base of the leaf stem. See that? That is new life just waiting for spring.

Waiting – just like me.
