Velma Jones sipped her tea next to her window. Jamie seemed closer somehow after missing him so much yesterday.

An aide entered and Velma smiled in her direction. Her once bright blue eyes, now milky with age, could only see the worker’s shape vaguely. All of the aides were “Missie-girl” to Velma.

“‘Morning, Miz Jones. How’re you doing today? Shall I close the winder for ya?”

Nah, Missie-girl. I’s fine. I’s lissenin to them noisemakers out there. Must be a storm a-comin, they are that noisy. Jamie and I allus loved to walk in the rain. Jus lissen to em!

“All of the aides were “Missie-girl” to Velma.” <– I love this line!

When my husband and I were first married, and living in Tennessee, we would sit on our porch and watch thunderstorms roll in over the mountains. Watching lightning storms is still something I love doing.

  3. Nicely done. (Hm, I almost went with “milky eye(s)” for this prompt too.)

Dialect is tricky but I think you really nailed it; good voices, here.

I could picture this whole scene in my mind. Terrific job with the southern accents!

  5. Velma Jones. Love that name. Of course, I love just about every name that starts with V. 😉

And you know what’s interesting? Totally didn’t “hear” that Velma was in a nursing home. I imagined her at work – an aging, ossifying old lady that had been so valuable they just kept her on. And the aide was some little upstart.

Gotta love how the mind works. I’ve been spending too much time with amazing women lately, so I just couldn’t imagine one being in a nursing home. 😉
