Caffeine! That was the first to go. I miss coffee so much: dark, rich, Brazilian blend coffee; fragrant, Kona blends. I don’t miss heart palpitations and the sour stomach, but I miss the thought of it – the smell of it – the first cup of it each morning.

One last smoke, and then I’ll go in. They want me to quit this too, but, dagnabbit! It’s all I’ve got left.

There is something quite lonely about this picture — a solitary man on the verge of something life changing enjoying a simple pleasure. I wanna go give him a hug.

    Great post! 🙂

I can remember seeing a patient at the nursing home my grandmother was in, smoking through a trac tube. Amazing how totally addictive nicotine can be.

My pops could have been this man! I remember taking him to have some of his lip removed and having to wait for him to have one last smoke. He did finally quit though.

Hmm… “What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger?” Not in this case, I suppose. Love your Character’s thoughts and that you even threw in the ‘dagnabbit’. Great work!

  6. Don’t they say that nicotine is the most addictive drug of them all? Our brains are just not well-equipped to handle the abundance and availability we experience every day.
