I’m still feeling miserable, but plopped in front of the tv this morning to watch (in between sneak naps) the ceremonial start of the 2007 Iditarod Dog Sled Race. Now, there may be some out there who feel that the poor doggies are put upon and harmed by this race, but those people apparently have NEVER seen these doggies begging to be let onto the trail. They yip and they yap and they pull like crazy. Good doggies!

So, here are some links for you to follow over the next week plus – line up and place your “bets” ladies and gentlemen, who will be the winner of this year’s race to Nome?

Nope, I don’t know, either. But, it looks like a great field – lots of rookies to the race – several who were born/raised in Iowa, Lisa! One of those was #67, Matt Anderson. (he’s the only one whose number I got written down – between those sneak naps and all, you see). His bio says that he currently lives in Pineville, WY.

The Darlin’ of the course, of course, is DeeDee Jonrowe. It would be so wonderful to see her take the race! She’s had a tough row to hoe the past couple of years.

You can follow along on the course by going to the official Iditarod site, or race sponsor, Cabela’s, or my tv news station of choice, KTUU.

And, today is Susan Butcher Day. She is the only female four time Iditarod winner. Last year, in the midst of her battle with leukemia, she came out onto the race course and helped at the checkpoints along the way. She said that the racers had supported her and she wanted to give a little back. Susan lost her battle with cancer August 5, 2006.

Well, I’m headed back out to my chair – type atcha all later.

Hey sniffly! Thanks for sharing that. I had no idea anyone from Iowa took part in the iditarod. That’s cool. Not as cool as a Jamaican bobsled team but cool nonetheless. hahaha

    Hope you feel better soon!

    *smoooch* (from a looooong distance)

because I am all about fair play and such – and because I expect such as this – I am going to approve this comment. We all have a right to our own opinions – everyone of us having one and all that – so I am going to let you say this. Thanks for visiting my site – I hope you will come back again. I stand by my original statement about these dogs being willing to run and enjoying themselves. I know several of the local mushers and their dogs are their lives – they care about each animal as much – or more – than they care about themselves. Come on up and see for yourself.

Yup, no Jamaican bobsled team – although they WERE mentioned as the newscasters introduced Hernan Maquieria from Argentina! Lots of “northern” countries and states have mushers taking part, but he is the only Argentine.

Hey, Lisa! That is very cool. He seemed like a really nice young man when he was interviewed before the start – I think that is why I remembered him in particular (that – and the fact that I wrote down his bib number so I could look him up). It’ll be fun tracking him over the next coupla weeks. Official start is in Willow this morning.
