The following is my entry for this week’s 100 word challenge: ditch.
——————————————

“Real shame, that,” John murmured, as he shuffled by.

“What a waste,” agreed Sue from her porch.

The city stepped in and wrote a citation for overgrown grass and the trash in the ditch.

Yet not one person knocked on the door and asked after the aging couple who had lived there for 30 plus years; the couple who had cheered on the accomplishments of each boy and girl on the street; the couple who bought every magazine and box of cookies proffered.

Letters were written – complaints filed – heads were shaken. But nobody checked.

Nobody knew the couple was gone.

than I have ever run or walked. 26.2 miles is what daughter, ladybug, accomplished yesterday in her first* Marathon.

We followed her and moved ahead of her to spots along the course in order to cheer her on. We especially wanted to be at mile 20 because that is where she hit a wall when training.

Sunday her wall came a little further in – and it slowed her down to a shuffle. By mile 24 we knew she was headed for a rough last couple of miles.

That is when we also learned that a couple of major intersections were not being watched by police or volunteers. So daughter lessa and I along with a friend of ladybug’s took it on ourselves to block those intersections so she could safely cross.

Only ticked off one driver and he, surely by today, will get over his bad self.

Ladybug crossed the line – we gathered around to congratulate her . . . and cry with her . . . and get her safely into warm shelter so she could sit, get off her shoes, rehydrate (which she did very well throughout the race), get her sugar back up (I handed her a pluot) and commisserate with her about what she had just accomplished.

So very proud of her. Proud of everyone who accomplished their goals yesterday. Thankful for family and friends gathering her up in their arms and loving her through it all.

That Finish line made all those months of training – running with the moose and even a few bears along the trails – hiding coffee cans with tp along her route (and learning to potty in the woods where she might be spotted – heh) – early morning runs in cold, wind, rain, and (very little) dry sun – worth it in the long run. (runner humor)

Love ya, ladybug! You done good, girlie. And, that toe will heal – after the nail falls off. It’s a badge of courage – you are now an official runner.

*I say “first” because, despite her protestations, I know how running gets into your skin and I imagine she may see another marathon in her future – even (especially) if it is in conjunction with that IronMan she wants to do.

Farm, that is . . . We got our first box of veggie deliciousness Wednesday. Yummo stuffs! Hubbymoose and I washed off all the greens and bagged them for the fridge – separating out some for daughters.

Here’s what was in the box:
Green Leaf Lettuce, Organic – 1 each
Golden Beets, Organic – 1 bunch
Green Chard, Organic – 1 bunch
Bunched Carrots, Organic – 1 bunch
Red Radishes, Organic – 1 bunch
Cucumbers, Organic – 1 each
Escarole, Organic – 1 bunch
Napa Cabbage, Organic – 1 each
Dapple Dandy Pluots, Organic – 4 each
Nectarines, Organic – 3 each
Tosca Pears, Organic – 4 each
Gala Apples, Organic – 4 each

Can we all say, YUMMO! ?

We’ve had salad every day – and last night I roasted the golden beets. Chopped them up into bite sized pieces, chopped an onion into wedges, put them into a baggie with olive oil, salt, peppeer and some garlic. Shook them to cover all and placed onto a baking sheet. Baked at 350 until golden brown and soft. (about 40 minutes)

That’s some good eatin’ there, folks!

Tonight I am making stuffed cabbage rolls with the napa cabbage. Mixing some ground turkey with mild sausage, rice, chopped onion, and spices. Will bake covered in tomato sauce. Serving with a big salad with chopped pear and gorgonzola cheese.

Have I mentioned here that I am trying to get a bit healthier? I’ve been riding my stationary bike for several months now, and have been trying to watch what I eat. But now it is time to get a lot more serious about it.

Got some “bad” news from the doctor a couple of weeks ago. My blood sugar was out of the range he wanted it – so I have an appointment with him Wednesday to see where we are going with that. Am hoping to be put on an oral med and told to watch the numbers for a period of time when it can be reevaluated. I think if the weight keeps coming off (17 pounds since December – yay, me!) that I will be able to go off any medication and just keep watching it.

In the meantime, hubbymoose, lessa, and ladybug (and families) are enjoying lots of good, nutritious, yummy freshness.

It’s bad enough to
Take remedial math
Freshman year

Worse yet – I am
The oldest in the room
At 60 and counting

Counting! Ha – ha
Made a math joke
Well, sorta

I’m surrounded by youth
Freshly scrubbed and
YOUNG youth

Trying to remember
Multiplication tables
In my head . . . wait

What the heck is THIS?
A sheet of symbols
+ – x (got it – know those)

Teacher, erm, Professor?
Sorry to be dense here
I know I seem a dunce to many

I know some of this
But now I’m lost
< >
I have NO clue!

This is my entry for the 100 Word Challenge, by Velvet Verbosity. VV posts a weekly challenge to tell a story in only 100 words. This week’s challenge prompt is Greater.

She’s snarkalicious . . .

She’s witty . . .

She has a mouth on her . . .

She had a great teacher in all three.

She’s the one . . . the only . . .

Peppermist, my oldest granddaughter.

Welcome to the greater blogosphere, grand-gorlie. Try not to make me blush too much. (hahahaha – I think your mama has you beat on that, anyway.)
